Golden Chief Slot Review, RTP & Free Play
Golden Chief Slot Review
Launched by Barcrest, the Golden Chief slot machine actually looks more like an IGT slot than this developer’s usual offering. As you may have guessed from the title of the game, Golden Chief is all about Native American culture and North American wildlife. More reminiscent of a land-based slot than an online one, the game features Barcrest’s rather nasty Big Bet mode.
Look & Feel:
Simple graphics, but thematic ones fill the reels of this slot, as well as copious numbers of high playing card symbols which have been crudely designed to mimic Native American designs. Golden Chief does still look like a decent slot, though, even if it doesn’t necessarily feel like a winner when you start to wager on it.
There just 10 paylines spread over the 5 reels of this slot, but that’s not the problem – the wagering range is. Ordinarily, the slot will cost you between 10p and £500 a game, which is a decent wagering range. However, if you want to take advantage of certain bonus features, you need to activate Big Bet mode, which will set you back between £20 and £50 a spin. It is hard to believe that Barcrest still runs this rather scandalous practice.
Wild symbols are easy to spot, appearing as mosaic-style symbols. They can substitute for all other icons barring bonus symbols. Expanding wilds also appear as chiefs, and they can occupy whole reels and boost the number of paylines you play with to 50 or even 100 in all, with mystery symbols added along the way.
Big Bet Mode: There are three Big Bet modes you can switch on. The £20 bet promises bigger cash prizes and twin-stacked scatters. The £30 bet offers the same but expanding wilds which remain until the end of the free spin bonus, and an extra life is provided in Totem Riches. The £50 bet offers all the above and 100 paylines in the feature.
Golden Bonuses: Landing 3 or 4 of the bonus symbols (Golden Bonus) on the reels will trigger one of three bonuses in this slot. The Cash Canyon bonus offers you the chance to spin a wheel and move around a board to win prizes. The free spin feature promises 5 spins (potentially up to 30 or none if you gamble with them), whilst the aforementioned Totem Riches bonus can see players select totem poles to win prizes and climb multiplier ladders. The collect sign ends the bonus unless you have an extra life (via the Big Bet mode).
Golden Chief RTP:
Without the Big Bet mode activated, players are looking at an RTP rate of 94.12%, which is below the industry standard. With the Big Bet mode activated, this rises to 98.14% which is superb. The non-progressive jackpot is capped at 500x your total stake.
Barcrest have deliberately dropped the RTP to get you trigger the Big Bet mode, and they are holding back on features, so you wager large sums, too. As good as Golden Chief looks, this practice is unlikely to find many fans in the online casino world, and so few people are going to pay any attention to this, or other Barcrest slots where the Big Bet mode is present.
